At Artur Appliance Repair, we recently handled a challenging repair in Palm Harbor, FL. The job involved a 2006 Thermador built-in refrigerator, model KBUDT4270A02. This refrigerator was experiencing a significant issue: a refrigerant leak through the evaporator. The client, eager to extend the life of their trusted appliance, requested a comprehensive repair to address the problem and ensure long-term functionality.
Diagnosing the Problem
When our experienced technician arrived, they conducted a thorough inspection. The symptoms pointed to a possible refrigerant leak, which we confirmed by using nitrogen under pressure. This method allowed us to locate the leak—through the evaporator. Tiny bubbles escaping from the evaporator coil indicated the breach (see video below).
Given the refrigerator’s age and the confirmed leak, we recommended replacing the evaporator, filter, and compressor. The client agreed to this plan, understanding that it would extend the appliance’s lifespan and ensure reliable performance.
The Repair Process
Evaporator Replacement: First, we safely removed the faulty evaporator. Before installing the new one, we blew out the condenser, capillary tube, and all other components with nitrogen. This step ensures the system is free from contaminants that could affect performance. Additionally, we cleaned the evaporation tray, which collects water during the defrost cycle, and the condenser to optimize cooling efficiency (see images of the old and new evaporator below).
Filter Replacement: Next, we replaced the filter drier. This component plays a vital role in removing moisture and contaminants from the refrigerant. By doing so, it prevents future issues and keeps the system running efficiently.
Compressor Replacement: Finally, at the client’s request, we installed a new compressor. Although the original compressor was still working, the client wanted to be proactive. Replacing it would help extend the refrigerator’s lifespan and reduce the risk of future breakdowns (see images of the old and new compressor below).
Conclusion
After completing the repairs, we thoroughly tested the Thermador refrigerator to ensure all components were functioning correctly. The client was pleased with the results and confident that the repairs would provide reliable service for years to come.
