Wolf Range or Cooktop Burner Keeps Clicking or Won't Light
The clicking is the igniter sparking. It should stop once the burner is lit, so clicking that goes on and on means the igniter either can't light the gas or can't tell that it has.
What it usually is
Most common first.
- Moisture after a boil-over or cleaning
Water in the burner or around the igniter is the most common cause. It can take hours to dry out on its own.
- Burner cap or ring out of place
Wolf's sealed burners come apart in a few pieces for cleaning. If one goes back crooked, the spark misses the gas or the flame doesn't reach the igniter.
- Clogged burner ports or a dirty igniter
Grease and food baked onto the ports or onto the white ceramic igniter weaken the spark and block the gas next to it.
- Failed igniter, burner switch, or spark module
If one burner misbehaves, we look at that burner's igniter and switch. If several do, the spark module or its power supply is more likely.
- No gas or no power
The igniters need electricity and the burners need the gas supply open. If nothing sparks at all, or it sparks and never lights at any burner, check both.
What you can safely check yourself
- Turn every knob fully off. If you smell gas, stop here, leave the house, and call your gas company from outside.
- Once the cooktop is cool, lift off the grate, the burner cap, and the loose burner pieces. Dry everything with a towel and let the burner air out for a few hours.
- Brush the ports with a dry toothbrush. Wipe the igniter gently. It's ceramic, and it cracks if you lean on it.
- Put the pieces back so each one sits flat and doesn't rock.
- If the clicking won't stop with the knobs off, switch off the range's breaker. That stops the spark until it can be looked at.
- Try the other burners. If none of them spark, look at the breaker before anything else.
Anything past this, like refrigerant, gas valves, wiring, or taking panels off, is a job for a technician.
When to call
- It's still clicking after a day of drying with everything seated.
- One burner has no spark while the others spark normally.
- The burner lights but the clicking carries on.
- The flame is uneven, mostly yellow, or lifting off the burner.
- The clicking continues with every knob off.
Common questions
Is it safe to use a Wolf burner that keeps clicking?
If it lights and burns with a steady blue flame, the clicking itself isn't dangerous, but it wears the ignition parts and it means something is off. If the burner doesn't light, turn it off. Don't let gas run while it clicks.
Why do my Wolf burners click after I clean the cooktop?
Water or cleaner got into the burner or onto the igniter, or a cap went back on slightly off. Dry it, re-seat it, and give it time.
