GE Profile Refrigerator Leak in Largo: A Frozen Defrost Drain

A longtime client in Largo has a GE Profile French-door refrigerator (model GFE26GMHFES) that had started leaking onto her wood floors from time to time. She assumed the water was coming from somewhere in the back of the unit.

Tracing the real source

The water was actually coming from the freezer. Frost had built up low in the freezer section, and the defrost drain line itself had frozen solid. During each defrost cycle, the meltwater had nowhere to go — instead of running down the drain like it’s supposed to, it was backing up and leaking out a little at a time, which is what was reaching her floors.

Getting it apart and cleared out

Clearing it properly meant taking the freezer down to the drain: the freezer door, all the shelves, and the back cover came off to get to the evaporator coil and drain area (no icemaker in this unit to work around, which simplified things). Everything was thawed out, cleaned up, and dried before putting it back together.

Confirming the fix

Once everything was back together, we finished up the way we always do on a drain issue — pouring a half glass of water down the drain to confirm it flows through cleanly before calling the job done.
