Commercial Ice Machine Repair in Palm Harbor: Fixing a Bad Bin Level Reed Switch

A Sion OCU-130 commercial icemaker in Palm Harbor, kept on hand for fishing trips, had stopped making ice entirely. It acted like the bin was already full and would shut down after a cycle or two, even though it was empty.
Diagnosing the bin level sensor
The OCU-130 tracks bin level with a sensor that works like a reed switch: a magnet moves as ice piles up in the bin, and when the bin fills, the magnet gets close enough to trip the reed switch and open the contact, telling the control board to stop making ice.
On this unit, the reed switch’s contact should be closed in the normal, bin-not-full position and only open once the bin actually fills. Instead, it was sitting open all the time — so the board saw a “full bin” signal no matter what, and shut the machine down after a cycle or two.
A repair instead of a replacement
Opening up the sensor showed the problem: the reed switch’s outer casing was damaged, which was letting it stick in the wrong (open) position instead of resting closed like it should.
Since the OCU-130 isn’t a common model locally, sourcing a full replacement sensor assembly would have taken longer than needed. Repairing the sensor directly — replacing just the damaged reed switch — was the faster path to getting the client’s ice back, so that’s what we did. With the reed switch replaced, the bin level sensor reads correctly again and the machine cycles normally, refilling the bin as ice is used.
