Sub-Zero Refrigerator Dispenser Turning On By Itself in Clearwater: Rats Got to the Cable

A Sub-Zero refrigerator in Clearwater had its dispenser turning itself on with nobody touching it.

Not the usual cause this time

This kind of spontaneous dispenser behavior is usually a display board or control board issue — a communication fault between the two. That’s where the diagnosis started here too, but the actual cause turned out to be something different: the house has a rat problem, and they’d chewed through the cable connecting the two boards.

Ordering the part and getting the door off

This cable isn’t something we keep in stock — it had to be ordered directly from Sub-Zero.

Replacing it means taking the refrigerator door off entirely to route the new cable through. Not the most convenient repair on this design, but that’s what it takes.

Result

With the new cable installed and the door back on, the dispenser is behaving normally again. If a Sub-Zero dispenser is acting up on its own, it’s usually the board connection — but if there’s any chance of rodents getting into the space behind the unit, the cable itself is worth a look too.
