Thermador Range Hood Not Working in Pinellas County: A Burned Control Board, Repaired Instead of Replaced

- Symptom
- The range hood didn't work at all, even though it was getting power.
- Cause
- The hood's control board had burned at one of its wiring terminals.
- Fix
- Instead of a replacement that now costs about $1,800 as a kit, we repaired the burned section of the board on the spot. The hood works again.
A client in Pinellas County called about their Thermador wall hood. It had stopped working completely. No fan, no lights, nothing. Power was reaching the hood, so the problem was inside it.
A burned spot on the board
The control box on these hoods is made in Germany, and the date on this one puts it at about 25 years old.
When we opened it up, we found the problem right away. One of the wiring terminals on the board had burned. The plastic had melted around it, and the wire going into it was charred.
Replace it, or fix it?
A new board for this hood costs well over $1,000. Because the model is old, it’s now only sold as a kit together with the button board, at about $1,800 list price before tax. That’s a lot of money for one burned terminal.
So we offered to repair the board on the spot instead. We took it out, cleaned up the burned area and rebuilt the connection with fresh solder and a jumper wire.
Running again
With the board back in, the hood works again, and the client didn’t have to buy a whole new set of boards. If your high-end hood goes dead, have the board checked before you order a replacement. More on our Thermador repairs.
FAQ
Why is my Thermador range hood completely dead?
If power is reaching the hood and nothing works, the control board is a common cause. On this one, a terminal on the board had burned and the circuit was open.
Can a range hood control board be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes, yes. When the damage is limited to one spot, like a burned terminal, the board can often be repaired, which costs far less than a new board.
