A client in Palm Harbor called about their Frigidaire Gallery French door refrigerator (model FGHF2366PFEA, made in 2017). An error had come up, and the fresh food section was warm — 70°F, the same as the room.
One evaporator, one fan
This refrigerator has a single evaporator, located in the freezer. All of the cold air for both compartments is made there, and the evaporator fan is what pushes it up into the fresh food section. If that fan stops, the cold air stays down in the freezer and the fresh food section slowly climbs to room temperature — exactly what happened here.
To get to the fan, the freezer drawer is emptied and the rear cover is removed, exposing the evaporator coil with the fan mounted above it.
Replacing the fan motor
The evaporator fan motor had failed and wasn’t moving air. It was replaced with a new one, and the fan blade and housing went back in place.
Result
With the new evaporator fan motor installed, cold air is moving from the evaporator up to the fresh food section again.
