GE French Door Fridge Not Cold Enough in Lake Valencia, Palm Harbor: A Slow Fresh Food Fan

- Symptom
- The fresh food section was cooling, but not as cold as it should be.
- Cause
- The fan in the fresh food section was still running, but not at full speed, so it wasn't moving enough cold air.
- Fix
- Replaced the fan with a genuine GE part we carry on the truck. The food was saved and the fridge is cooling properly.
A client in the Lake Valencia neighborhood of Palm Harbor called about their GE French door refrigerator (model GFE28GMKJES). The fresh food section was cooling, but not all the way. It just wasn’t getting as cold as it should.
A fan that was running, just slow
These GE fridges have their own fan in the fresh food section that pushes cold air off the coil and around the shelves. We found that fan still running, but not at full speed. A fan like that is easy to miss, because you can hear it and see it turning. It just isn’t moving enough air, so the fridge never quite gets down to temperature.
It’s a really common problem on these GEs. With the rear cover off, you can see the coil up top and the fan in its housing below it.
Replaced on the spot
We always keep these fans on the truck, so we swapped it right there. Here’s the old fan next to the new one.
The fridge is cooling properly again, and the client didn’t lose any food. If your GE French door is cool but not cold, the fan is a good place to start. More on our refrigerator repairs.
FAQ
Why is my GE French door fridge cool but not cold?
On many GE French door models, a fresh food fan that's slowing down is a common cause. It still spins, so it's easy to miss, but it doesn't move enough cold air to hold the right temperature.
Can a GE refrigerator fan be replaced in one visit?
Usually, yes. This one fails often enough that we keep the fans on the truck, so we replaced it on the spot.
