The fan behind the cover

Cold air in this fridge is made at the evaporator coil and pushed out by a fan behind a cover panel. We took the cover off to get at the fans.

Samsung evaporator cover removed from the refrigerator, with two fans mounted in the foam

The noisy one was failing. A fan like that gets loud as it wears, and it also stops moving as much air, so the coil stays cold while the food compartments warm up.

Swapped on the spot

We had the fan on the truck, so we replaced it right then.

With the new fan in, the noise was gone and the fridge went back to cooling. If your fridge fan gets loud, have it looked at before it quits completely. More on our refrigerator repair page.

FAQ

Why is my Samsung refrigerator fan so loud?

A fan that starts grinding or buzzing is usually wearing out. On this Samsung Family Hub the fan behind the evaporator cover was failing, and it wasn't moving enough cold air either.

Can a noisy fan make my fridge warm up?

Yes. The fan pushes cold air off the coil into the fridge and freezer. When it slows down or stops, the coil stays cold but the food compartments warm up.
