Whirlpool French Door Ice Maker Not Working in Westchase: New Ice Maker and Wiring Kit

- Symptom
- The ice maker in the Whirlpool French door fridge didn't work at all.
- Cause
- The original ice maker with an electronic control module had failed. On these fridges it's replaced with a different, standard-style ice maker, which needs new wiring.
- Fix
- We installed Whirlpool kit W10882923, a new ice maker plus the two wire harnesses that come with it.
The ice maker in this Whirlpool French door fridge in Westchase had quit completely. No ice, nothing happening. The fridge is model GZ25FSRXYY2.
Not a one-for-one swap
This fridge came with an ice maker that has an electronic control module, the black box on the end of it. When that ice maker fails, Whirlpool doesn’t send the same one back. The replacement is kit W10882923, which has a regular ice maker with the gear-driven control head you’ll find in most fridges, plus new wire harnesses.
Here are the two side by side. The new ice maker’s tan control head is on the left, the old electronic module on the right.
We’re not sure why Whirlpool went back to the older style, but that’s what the part is now. It replaced the earlier part number W10377151.
The wiring goes in too
The new ice maker connects differently from the old one, so the kit includes two new harnesses that have to go in at the same time. Putting in just the ice maker on the old wiring won’t work.
We ran the new harnesses, mounted the new ice maker in the housing and put it all back in the door. A new ice maker has to get cold enough before it makes its first batch, and that takes about three or four hours, so the first ice shows up after we’ve left.
If your Whirlpool, Maytag or KitchenAid French door fridge stopped making ice and has that black-box ice maker, plan on the full kit, not just the ice maker. Here’s more on our ice maker repair service.
FAQ
Why does the Whirlpool ice maker kit W10882923 come with wire harnesses?
It replaces an older ice maker that had an electronic control module. The new ice maker is a standard style that connects differently, so the kit includes new harnesses, and they have to go in together with it.
Can I put in just the ice maker and keep the old wiring?
No. On this Whirlpool French door fridge the new ice maker won't run right on the old harness, so we replace the ice maker and the wiring together.
