Two parts that work together

Two parts on a front-loader decide how water moves in and out of the tub. The drain pump pushes the water out, and the pressure switch senses the water level so the control knows when the tub is full and when it’s empty. When either one starts to fail, the washer can work fine most of the time and then throw an error mid-cycle.

The video shows the inside of the washer with the rear panel off, from the back of the tub down to the drain pump at the bottom of the cabinet.

New drain pump

The drain pump was replaced with a genuine Whirlpool part. Below, the new pump sits on its box, with the old one underneath.

New pressure switch

The water level pressure switch was replaced too — the new one still in its bag, the old one next to it.

Result

With a new drain pump and a new pressure switch, the washer is repaired. If your front-loader is draining poorly or throws an error every now and then, have the drain pump and pressure switch looked at before it gets worse. More about our washer repairs.

FAQ

Why is my front-load washer draining poorly and showing errors?

A weak drain pump is a common cause, and a failing pressure switch — the part that senses the water level — can add errors on top. Parts like these often work most of the time before they fault out.

What does a washer pressure switch do?

It senses the water level in the tub, so the control knows when to stop filling and whether the water has drained.
