A client in Safety Harbor called about their GE Profile top-load washer (model PTW600BSR1WS). It was getting badly off balance during the cycle, and the clothes were coming out wet — the washer wasn’t spinning them out properly.

Worn suspension rods

On a top-load washer, the tub hangs from four suspension rods — one at each corner. They act like shock absorbers, keeping the tub steady while it agitates and spins. When they wear out, the tub swings too far, the washer reads it as an unbalanced load, and it can’t get up to full spin speed. That’s what we found. The rods were worn.

With the top lifted, you can see where the rods mount at the corners of the cabinet.

All four replaced

The rods wear together, so all four were replaced as a set. They had to be ordered, so the repair was finished on a return visit once the parts came in — genuine GE replacement parts.

After installing them, we ran the washer through test mode to check agitation, balance, and spin. Everything worked as it should.

Result

The washer runs smoothly again and spins the clothes out properly. If your top-load washer is banging around and leaving clothes wet, look at the suspension rods first. We work on top-loaders and front-loaders of every brand. See washer repair.

FAQ

Why is my top-load washer so off balance?

Worn suspension rods are a common cause — they no longer damp the tub's movement, so it swings hard during agitation and spin.

Can worn suspension rods leave clothes wet?

Yes. When the tub bangs around, the washer can't reach full spin speed, so the clothes come out wet.
