GE stacked washer and dryer laundry center in a closet in Tarpon Springs
Symptom
The washer filled with hot water no matter which temperature was picked, and it had been doing it for a long time.
Cause
The hot and cold water hoses were connected to the wrong inlets on the washer.
Fix
We swapped the hoses to the right inlets. Cold settings fill cold again, and no parts were needed.

This GE stacked laundry center in Tarpon Springs belongs to clients we last helped about three years ago. The washer’s a little over a year and a half old (model GUD27ESSM1WW), and it had one odd habit. Every load filled with hot water, cold setting or not. They told us it had been going on for a long time.

Nothing was broken

When a washer only gives you hot water, you might expect a bad water valve or a control problem. Here it was simpler. The washer has two inlets in the back, one for hot and one for cold, and it opens one side or the other depending on the temperature you pick. On this one the hot and cold hoses were on each other’s inlets. So every time the washer asked for cold, it got hot.

We swapped the hoses back where they belong and ran a fill on cold. Cold water came in. No parts, quick visit.

A two-minute check at home

If your washer seems stuck on hot, look behind it before you call anyone. Follow the hose from the hot faucet on the wall and make sure it ends up at the inlet marked H. Turn the water off first if you move them. Running hot water on a cold setting can shrink and fade clothes, and it costs you on the water heater too. If the hoses are right and it still fills wrong, that’s when a washer repair visit makes sense.

FAQ

Why does my washer fill with hot water on the cold setting?

If the hot and cold supply hoses are on the wrong inlets, the washer opens the valve it thinks is cold and gets hot water. Check that the hot hose goes to the inlet marked H and the cold one to C.

Does a washer that only fills hot always need a new part?

Not always. On this GE laundry center in Tarpon Springs the hoses were simply swapped, so we switched them around and no parts were replaced.
