GE Laundry Center Washer Shaking on Spin in Dunedin: New Suspension Didn't Help, the Basket Was Bent

GE stacked washer and dryer laundry center in a bathroom in Dunedin
Symptom
The washer in a GE laundry center shook hard every time it spun. Another technician had already replaced the suspension rods, and it didn't help.
Cause
The suspension was fine. The wash basket was bent, most likely with a broken base, so it wobbled at speed.
Fix
The basket has to be replaced, which means taking the washer completely apart.

This GE stacked laundry center in Dunedin had a washer that shook hard every time it went into spin (model GUD24ESSM1WW). Before we got there, another technician had replaced the suspension rods. The shaking didn’t change at all.

The suspension wasn’t the problem

The rods were fine, and that didn’t surprise us. On these GE units they don’t wear out often. They work on air instead of oil, a different setup from a lot of other brands, and they hold up well.

So we took the front off and watched the tub while it spun.

A bent basket

The wash basket inside was crooked. Most likely its base is broken, and once it’s out of true it wobbles at spin speed and throws the whole tub around. No suspension can fix that.

The basket has to be replaced. On a laundry center that’s a big job, since the washer has to come completely apart to get it out.

If your washer still shakes after new suspension parts, the basket or something else inside may be the real cause. Here’s what we cover on our washer repair page.

FAQ

Why is my washer still shaking after new suspension rods?

If the rods weren't the problem, new ones won't stop the shaking. On this GE laundry center the wash basket itself was bent, so it wobbled no matter how good the suspension was.

Do GE laundry center suspension rods wear out often?

Not often in our experience. They work on air rather than oil, unlike many other brands, and they tend to hold up well.
