Sub-Zero Ice Maker Not Making Ice
An ice maker needs three things: it has to be switched on, water has to reach it, and the freezer has to be cold enough. Most no-ice calls come down to one of those, so we check them before blaming the ice maker itself.
What it usually is
Most common first.
- Ice maker switched off
Sub-Zero controls have an ice maker on/off setting, and it's easy to turn off by accident.
- No water reaching it
A closed shutoff valve, a kinked supply line, or an overdue water filter on models that have one will all starve the ice maker.
- Freezer not cold enough
The ice maker only cycles when the freezer is cold enough. If the ice cream is soft, the ice maker isn't the real problem.
- Ice bin out of place or ice clumped together
On many models the ice maker pauses when the bin isn't seated or when it senses the bin is full. A solid clump of old ice can fool it.
- Frozen fill tube
The small tube that feeds water into the ice maker can freeze shut, sometimes because of a water valve that doesn't close all the way.
- Failed water inlet valve or ice maker assembly
Once the simpler causes are ruled out, these are the two parts that usually need replacing.
What you can safely check yourself
- Check that the ice maker is turned on at the control panel.
- Find the water shutoff for the refrigerator and make sure it's fully open.
- If your model has a water filter and it's overdue, replace it.
- Pull the ice bin, dump or break up clumped ice, and slide the bin all the way back in.
- Check the freezer temperature. It should be at or near 0.
- After any change, give it a full day. Ice makers are slow, and the first batches after a restart take a while.
Anything past this, like refrigerant, gas valves, wiring, or taking panels off, is a job for a technician.
When to call
- The water supply is good and the ice maker is on, but there's no ice after a day.
- The cubes are small, hollow, or fused together.
- You find water or a sheet of ice under the ice maker or on the freezer floor.
- The freezer itself is warm.

Common questions
How long does a Sub-Zero take to make ice after it's turned on?
Give it about a day to produce a normal amount. A freezer that was just started, or that had its door open for a long time, has to get cold before the ice maker will cycle.
Can a clogged water filter stop the ice maker?
Yes, on models with a filter. A restricted filter cuts the water flow, and the ice maker gets too little water or none. If ice production dropped off slowly and the filter is overdue, start there.
