Sub-Zero Service or Vacuum Condenser Light On
Both lights are the refrigerator telling you it has noticed a problem. Vacuum Condenser is a maintenance reminder you can usually handle yourself. Service means the control has logged a fault, and it tends to come back until the cause is fixed.
What it usually is
Most common first.
- Dirty condenser
The Vacuum Condenser message, alone or together with Service, usually comes up when the unit has been running too long or the cabinet has been too warm. A condenser clogged with dust is the usual reason.
- A door left ajar
A door or drawer that didn't quite close overnight can make the unit run long enough to bring up the same warning.
- Condenser fan or evaporator fan not running
If a fan has stopped, cleaning won't keep the light off for long, and the compartment keeps warming up.
- Defrost or temperature sensor fault
The control watches its sensors and the defrost cycle, and it logs a fault when a reading is out of range.
- Control board or sealed system problem
Less common. On many models we can read the stored fault codes from the control panel, which points us at the right part before anything gets replaced.
What you can safely check yourself
- Write down what the display shows, whether the light is steady or flashing, and both compartment temperatures. That's useful to us on the phone.
- Check that every door and drawer closes fully and nothing is holding one open.
- Clean the condenser if you can reach it. On many built-in models it's behind the grille at the top, and on others it's behind the kickplate. Switch the unit off first, then vacuum gently with a soft brush.
- Turn the unit off at its control panel and back on. On many models that clears the indicator.
- Watch it for the next day. If the temperatures are back to normal and the light stays off, you're done.
Anything past this, like refrigerant, gas valves, wiring, or taking panels off, is a job for a technician.
When to call
- The light comes back after you cleaned the condenser and reset the unit.
- The refrigerator or freezer is warm, or food is thawing.
- The display shows a code along with Service.
- You can't get to the condenser without pulling the unit out.

Common questions
Can I just reset the Sub-Zero Service light?
You can turn the unit off and on, and on many models the light clears. If the cause is still there it'll come back, and every reset is more time the food spends warming up. If it returns once, have it looked at.
Is the Vacuum Condenser light an emergency?
No. It's a maintenance reminder. Clean the condenser soon, though, because a clogged one makes the compressor run hotter and longer than it should.
