KitchenAid Built-In Refrigerator in Palm Harbor: A New Water Leak Under the Evaporator Drain

- Symptom
- Water leaking onto the floor under the refrigerator.
- Cause
- A new leak at the lower part of the evaporator, where the defrost drain water goes.
- Fix
- We pulled the refrigerator out and traced the leak. This isn't the first repair on this refrigerator.
This is another visit to the same KitchenAid built-in side-by-side in Palm Harbor, model KSSC48FKS00, that we’ve written about before: a new evaporator, a new ice maker and water filter and a very small refrigerant leak found with UV light. It’s more than 25 years old, and this isn’t its first repair.
A new leak
This time it was water. There was a new leak coming from the lower part of the evaporator, where the defrost drain water goes. Water and soapy foam from our cleaning had collected on the floor under the refrigerator.
Getting to it
It’s a heavy built-in, so we had to pull it out of its opening to get at the bottom.

FAQ
Why is my built-in refrigerator leaking water onto the floor?
Defrost water is supposed to run down through the evaporator drain and into a pan. If it escapes at the lower part of the evaporator, it ends up under the refrigerator. That's what we saw on this KitchenAid.
Is it worth repairing an old built-in refrigerator again?
This KitchenAid is more than 25 years old and has had several repairs, but it's still a very good refrigerator, so we keep working on it.
