Thermador Refrigerator Not Cooling
When a Thermador built-in or column refrigerator warms up, the first things we want to know are whether it's running at all and whether the freezer is still cold. Those two answers narrow the list below quickly.
What it usually is
Most common first.
- Dirty condenser
The condenser gets rid of the heat taken out of the cabinet. Covered in dust, it can't, and the unit runs constantly while the temperature creeps up.
- Evaporator fan or condenser fan not running
With the evaporator fan stopped, the coil gets cold but the air never reaches the shelves. A stopped condenser fan lets the compressor overheat.
- Defrost system failure
Frost builds on the evaporator until it's a solid block and air can't pass through. Frost on the back wall of the freezer is the sign.
- Door left ajar or gasket not sealing
Heavy panel doors and worn gaskets let warm air in, and the unit can't catch up.
- Control or temperature sensor fault
A bad sensor reading or a failed board can keep the compressor or fans from running when they should.
- Refrigerant leak
On older built-ins a leak in the evaporator is a real possibility. The compressor and fans run and it still doesn't get cold. We confirm a leak with a pressure test before recommending sealed system work.
What you can safely check yourself
- Make sure the unit has power and is switched on at its controls. Check the breaker.
- Check the set temperatures in case they were changed by accident.
- Close each door and look along the gasket for gaps, tears, or anything stuck to it.
- Make sure food isn't packed against the air vents.
- Depending on the model, the condenser is behind the grille at the top or behind the toe kick at the bottom. If your manual shows how to reach it, switch the unit off and vacuum it gently with a soft brush. If you'd have to pull the refrigerator out, leave that to us.
- Give it a full day before you decide whether anything changed.
Anything past this, like refrigerant, gas valves, wiring, or taking panels off, is a job for a technician.
When to call
- It's still warm a day after the checks above.
- The compressor runs all the time and the cabinet doesn't get colder.
- There's frost or ice on the back wall of the freezer.
- You hear a click every few minutes and nothing starts.

Common questions
Is an older Thermador refrigerator worth repairing?
Often it is. These are expensive units to replace, and a fan, a defrost part, or a control is a reasonable repair at any age. A sealed system leak is a bigger decision, and we'll tell you plainly when a repair doesn't make sense.
Why is my Thermador freezer cold but the refrigerator warm?
Often it's airflow, from a frosted-over evaporator or a stopped fan. On models where each section has its own cooling system, the fault is on the warm side. It takes testing to tell which.
